A luxury yacht capsized in Sinop Port after taking on water due to an open garage door, and was rescued through a delicate 7-day operation. A specialist team refloated and stabilized the vessel using a balloon system and crane. The cause of the sinking was determined to be water ingress through the garage door.
A luxury yacht in Sinop Harbor was rescued after a 7-day operation. Officials made statements regarding the rescue operation for the luxury yacht that began taking on water and capsized on May 30 when its garage door was left open while anchored. Yaşar Marangoz, the official from the company carrying out the rescue efforts, stated in his remarks on the process that they arrived at the scene following a notification received approximately 10 days ago. Marangoz said, 'We received an email and a phone call 10 days ago. They told us a yacht had sunk after taking on water. We came, conducted our surveys on the first day. Subsequently, we arrived here with our offshore vessel. We arrived. With our 8 expert personnel, we worked for 7 days to stabilize the boat using a ballooning system and necessary appropriate equipment. In 7 days, we brought the vessel to a floating position.'
RESCUED WITH CRANE ASSISTANCE
Stating that the process was carried out very delicately, Marangoz used the following expressions: 'When we brought it to a floating position, we rented and supplied our cranes. Of course, during this time, we made very fine calculations, precise computations, and very delicate stability boucle. If we hadn't done the stability boucle, there were risks of the crane tipping over, the vessel capsizing, listing, or breaking. After floating it with good precise calculation, we ensured the vessel was completely floated stably with the aid of a crane, with crane assistance.'
Marangoz stated that the vessel was made completely stable, saying, 'Currently, our vessel is fully stable, completely afloat. We are only pumping out minor waters from inside. We are securing it. Probably within a few days, under our control and escort, it will go to the Tuzla Shipyards Region for maintenance and necessary modifications and repairs.'
"CAUSE OF THE SINKING: WATER INGRESS FROM THE GARAGE DOOR"
Marine Engineer Berat Durmuş shared details about the technical process. Durmuş said, 'After the news of our boat's sinking, our company carried out certain engineering studies, and then we initiated this operation. In these studies, the boat's heel balance while sinking, etc., all these are important factors. Because the boat sank in a listing position. We made these calculations; in short, we conducted studies to complete this job in the safest way possible with appropriate equipment, correct divers, without damaging the port, preventing environmental conditions and pollution, and without causing any further damage.'
Stating that they completed the work after a 7-day operation, Durmuş used the following expressions: 'At the end of 7 days, as we started the 8th day, we completed our work with crane assistance, and as Yaşar Kaptan mentioned, with the aid of balloons we placed inside and outside.'
Durmuş provided the following information regarding the root cause of the sinking:
'The main reason for the boat's listing was determined to be water ingress through the garage door. Of course, detailed examinations of this will be conducted. These will be completed and identified by necessary surveys. But from what we detected, water enters through the garage door. The garage door should normally be isolated, but from there, water passes into the engine room again. As a result of the water ingress, the sinking of the vessel occurs over a period of 7-8 hours, 9 hours.'
Following the successfully completed operation, the luxury yacht will be handed over to its crew after the necessary ventilation processes are completed.
