In the United States, under the national security strategy, the Selective Service System has initiated efforts to automatically register men aged 18-25 for military service. Under the new law, severe penalties will be imposed on those who fail to register.

The Selective Service System (SSS), an agency operating as part of the national security strategy in the USA, has begun its work to automatically register American male citizens for military service.

YOUNG PEOPLE AGED 18-25 WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY REGISTERED FOR MILITARY SERVICE

It was shared on the SSS's online system that on March 30th, it submitted a draft rule to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs for the implementation of an automatic registration system for males aged 18-25 in the USA.

On the agency's website, it was reminded that US President Donald Trump signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2026 on December 18, 2025, mandating the automation of military registration procedures, and stated that these procedures will automatically go into effect starting from December.

In the information provided by the SSS, it was stated, "According to the new law, males in the country will be automatically registered within 30 days of their 18th birthday."

It was conveyed that this legal change transfers the registration responsibility from individual males to the SSS through integration with federal data sources.

In the section describing the SSS's mission on the website, the following statements were used: "To register men, to maintain a system that, when authorized by the President and Congress, rapidly provides manpower in a fair and equitable manner, and also to administer an alternative service program for conscientious objectors."

HEAVY PENALTIES MAY BE APPLIED TO THOSE WHO DO NOT REGISTER FOR MILITARY SERVICE

The SSS's information text included details that males who do not register for military service may lose the financial aid of the state they live in, and immigrant males may "lose the right to benefit from US citizenship."

According to the new law, US males who do not register may face a fine of up to $250,000 "under felony charges" and up to 5 years of imprisonment.

In the event of a military draft; a male can request exemption as a "conscientious objector" if he has religious or moral objections to war, while women will not be required to register.

In the USA, there has been no compulsory military service since 1973, which was implemented during the Vietnam War. According to the SSS, for compulsory military service to be reinstated, Congress must amend the Military Selective Service Act to authorize the President to induct personnel into the Armed Forces.
