An operation named "PAYMIX 5" was carried out in six provinces centered on Istanbul against illegal betting traffic conducted through the Malta-based crypto asset provider and payment institution PAYMIX. Dozens of real estate properties, luxury vehicles, and 467 bank and cryptocurrency accounts belonging to the network were seized.
Under the coordination of the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office Organized Crimes Investigation Bureau, teams from the Istanbul Provincial Gendarmerie Command Cyber Crimes Combating Branch Directorate carried out a massive illegal betting operation covering international cryptocurrency networks.
At the center of the investigation was the Malta-based crypto asset provider and payment institution PAYMIX, which was used as a financial bridge in the deposit and withdrawal traffic of illegal betting sites.
DETAILED “PROFILING” ON THE CRYPTO NETWORK
In the large-scale investigation named “PAYMIX 5,” it was revealed that the gang processed user data like a professional marketing company. It was determined that the network tracked step by step, through the crypto infrastructure, the deposit and withdrawal amounts, transaction frequencies, and last activity dates of players registered in the system.
It was found that the suspects categorized players into special categories such as “VIP,” “potential VIP,” “inactive,” and “long-term inactive,” and used special methods to keep the network alive. It was determined that people who had not transacted for a long time or had stopped betting were called one by one via phone and live support lines; they were encouraged to deposit money again through crypto channels by being promised “bonus,” “free bet,” and “special game rights.” It was understood that special financial offers were in effect for “VIP” customers making high-value transactions.
SIMULTANEOUS RAID IN 6 PROVINCES
Gendarmerie Cyber teams launched a simultaneous operation to capture 23 suspects whose identities were identified after technical and financial tracking. Within the scope of the operation carried out based in Istanbul, raids were conducted on identified addresses in the provinces of Antalya, Izmir, Kocaeli, Kütahya, and Samsun.
A heavy blow was struck against the organization in confiscation proceedings targeting assets derived from crime. As a result of the operation, 13 vehicles, 10 residences, and 6 fields and gardens determined to have been purchased with crime proceeds were confiscated. Additionally, 467 bank and cryptocurrency accounts used by the network in money laundering and transfer traffic were blocked.
It was reported that the judicial investigation into the organized crime network, in which international payment and crypto infrastructures were abused, continues meticulously in all its aspects.
