There are only a few days left until the critical date that concerns millions of people using old-style driver's licenses across Turkey. The General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs has issued a final warning to drivers by announcing that old-style licenses will lose their validity as of August 1, 2025. Citizens who do not renew their licenses on time will not only lose their legal right to drive but will also face high costs.
THEY WILL PAY 7 THOUSAND TL INSTEAD OF 15 TL
According to data, there are currently 3 million 211 thousand 157 drivers using old-style licenses. If these citizens do not apply by July 31, 2025, their documents will become invalid. As of that date, the renewal fee, which is currently only 15 TL, will rise to 7 thousand 438 TL for class B driver's licenses. Authorities are urging citizens not to leave the procedures until the last days to avoid congestion.
HOW TO RENEW A DRIVER'S LICENSE?
For driver's license renewal procedures, citizens must first make an appointment. These appointments can be made through the Alo 199 Call Center, mobile application, or nvi.gov.tr. On the appointment day, applicants must apply to the population directorates with the necessary documents.
WHAT DOCUMENTS ARE REQUIRED?
The documents that must be presented during the driver's license renewal application are as follows:
- Current (old-style) driver's license,
- Receipt proving that the 15 TL application fee has been paid,
- Driver's health report obtained from authorized health institutions,
- Biometric photo taken within the last 6 months,
- Registered address information in the MERNIS system.
NEW LICENSES WILL BE DELIVERED TO THE ADDRESS
The new type of licenses for drivers who complete their application procedures will be printed by the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs and sent to their addresses via PTT. To prevent citizens from experiencing any inconvenience during this process, a temporary driver's license will be issued, and it will be legally possible to drive with this document.
