Experts from the Bandırma district of Balıkesir have detected that mucilage formation in the Erdek Gulf has approached the sea surface by up to 5 meters. Scientists emphasized that if urgent measures are not taken, there is a high risk of the mucilage spreading and reappearing on the sea surface in the spring.
The nightmare of mucilage has returned. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Sarı, a faculty member at Bandırma Onyedi Eylül University Maritime Faculty, stated that mucilage has concentrated in large cloud clusters between 5 to 25 meters of sea level and has spread throughout the entire South Marmara region. Sarı, who presented the situation with underwater images, expressed that the problem has become widespread and poses a serious threat to the ecosystem in the area.
CALL TO THE MINISTRY
Fishermen in the Erdek Gulf are also negatively affected by mucilage. Some fishermen have called on the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, reporting that their nets have become unusable due to mucilage and that they are struggling to pull in their nets, emphasizing that the problem threatens their livelihoods.
