The murder of 15-year-old Sevgi Sevil in Diyarbakır was solved 14 years later. Her father, his cousin, and his cousin's daughter, who were found to have killed the young girl, were arrested and sent to prison.
The JASAT team, affiliated with the Diyarbakır Provincial Gendarmerie Command Public Order Branch Directorate, launched an investigation to solve the Sevgi Sevil murder committed 14 years ago. JASAT detectives reviewing the case file examined the conflicting statements at the crime scene.
Identifying inconsistencies in the statements of witnesses who claimed to be near the victim, teams focused on digital evidence. As a result of HTS (Historical Traffic Data) reviews, it was discovered that the family had tampered with evidence to conceal the murder evidence. Deepening the investigation, the JASAT team re-examined the 2012 autopsy report and video recordings.
THEY WAITED FOR 30 MINUTES
In the initial examination, the shooting distance recorded as 'distant shot' was confirmed by forensic experts to actually be a close-range shot from a distance of 2-75 centimeters. In light of the gathered intelligence and technical data, it was also documented that the family kept Sevgi Sevil at the scene for 30 minutes instead of taking her to the hospital.
HER FATHER AND TWO COUSINS ARRESTED
Based on the findings, within the scope of the operation carried out by JASAT, 8 suspects considered to be linked to the murder were detained. Among the suspects referred to the courthouse on April 17, Sevgi Sevil's father, her uncle's son, and her uncle's daughter were arrested. A travel ban abroad was imposed on the other 5 suspects.
