After the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, Iran and Palestine declared national mourning.
Hamas leader Haniyeh was killed as a result of an assassination in Tehran, where he was attending the inauguration ceremony of Iran's new President, Ebrahim Raisi. According to the official news agency IRNA, citing government officials, the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran issued a statement declaring a three-day mourning period.
ONE-DAY MOURNING IN PALESTINE
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas also declared a one-day national mourning due to Haniyeh's death. Abbas ordered the lowering of Palestinian flags to half-mast in official institutions in the West Bank today.
KEY FIGURE IN NEGOTIATIONS
Ismail Haniyeh, born in a refugee camp in Gaza in 1962, was an important figure since the establishment of Hamas. Haniyeh, who was imprisoned by Israel several times, survived an assassination attempt by Israel in 2003. After Hamas won the elections three years later, Haniyeh briefly served as the Prime Minister of Palestine. In 2017, he was elected as the head of Hamas' political bureau. Haniyeh led the Hamas delegation in negotiations mediated by Qatar, the US, and Egypt.
US officials claimed that despite the lack of a positive outcome from the meeting held in Rome last weekend, ceasefire negotiations could soon succeed.
