NATO allies announced a new support package for Ukraine, including air defense systems, missiles, and hundreds of thousands of drones. Moscow's response was swift to the massive package financed by the UK with proceeds from Russian assets and Germany's joint weapons production initiative; the Russian Foreign Ministry declared that any attack on Russian territory would be met with a "devastating response."
Following the Defense Ministers' Meeting held at NATO headquarters in Brussels, a comprehensive new military aid package for Ukraine, which is under Russian occupation, was announced. The decision by NATO allies to increase the supply of air defense systems, missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) drew a strong reaction from the Russian side. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced a "devastating response" to any potential NATO attack.
NATO SECRETARY GENERAL RUTTE: "WE MUST INCREASE SUPPORT TO END THE WAR"
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte appeared before the cameras alongside German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, UK Defense Minister Dan Jarvis, and Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov at the conclusion of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting. Emphasizing the critical importance of military aid to end the war, Rutte announced new commitments to Ukraine from Germany, the Netherlands, Latvia, Denmark, Lithuania, Norway, Luxembourg, Croatia, Sweden, Iceland, and partner country Australia.
Secretary General Rutte stated that the supply of long-range munitions is particularly vital for Ukraine and shared the following details:
Spain: Will provide air defense system support.
Canada: Will carry out military vehicle shipments.
Netherlands and Germany: Will send additional unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Czech Republic: New financial and logistical contributions will be made to the ammunition initiative led by the country.
GERMANY'S MOVE ON AIR DEFENSE AND JOINT PRODUCTION
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that Russia targets civilian areas at night with hundreds of UAVs and cruise missiles, describing this as "terrorism." Pistorius, indicating that Germany's priority is air defense, announced that they have delivered an additional IRIS-T air defense system to Ukraine and accelerated missile shipments.
The financial and industrial details of Germany's new aid package are as follows:
Missile Supply: Hundreds of air-to-air missiles will be sent from stocks. Additionally, a contribution of 200 million dollars will be provided for PAC-3 guided missiles under the "JUMPSTART" program.
PURL Mechanism: Another 200 million dollars will be transferred to the pool mechanism involving the supply of US weapons to Ukraine.
Joint Military Production: A German and a Ukrainian company signed an agreement for the joint production of unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) called "Termite" in Germany. Additionally, a framework agreement was made to develop new defense systems against ballistic missiles.
Pistorius also touched upon potential changes in the US military presence in Europe, stating that a coordinated roadmap among allies is being worked on and that no gap in defense capacity will be allowed in the short term.
UK'S PACKAGE FINANCED BY RUSSIAN ASSETS
UK Defense Minister Dan Jarvis stated that the Ukrainian army protects not only its own borders but also Europe's shared values. Jarvis announced that, within the scope of a 750 million pound fund obtained from the sale of confiscated Russian assets, the following military elements will be delivered by the end of the year:
150,000 Ukrainian-produced unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs),
More than 350 air defense missiles and radar systems.
Jarvis also reported that the UK will take command of the Multinational Force Headquarters to be established for Ukraine next month and will support the long-term reconstruction process.
RUSSIA: "LET NO ONE DOUBT, OUR RESPONSE WILL BE DEVASTATING"
A threatening response from Moscow to these NATO moves was not long in coming. Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova issued a warning to the Western alliance at her weekly press briefing. Zakharova stated, "Let no one doubt that if any NATO member state commits aggressive actions against any region of Russia, our response to those who start this crazy adventure will be devastating." Also stating that they will respond harshly to the EU's expansion of its sanctions list, the spokesperson added that they hope joint steps will be taken to increase security in the Caspian region (between Iran, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, and Russia).
