The former basketball player of Congolese descent and Hall of Fame member Dikembe Mutombo, who is among the NBA legends, passed away at the age of 58 due to brain cancer.

In a post made on NBA's social media account, it was announced that Mutombo, who had been undergoing treatment for a brain tumor for two years, has passed away.

During his career, the former basketball player of Congolese descent, Mutombo, played for the Denver Nuggets, Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, and Houston Rockets in the NBA, and he is remembered for his effective blocks and defensive performance under the basket.

In his 18 seasons in the league, Mutombo was selected as an all-star 8 times and was named the defensive player of the year 4 times; he became the block champion 3 times and the rebound champion 2 times. With 3,289 blocks, Mutombo also succeeded in becoming the second player in NBA history with the most blocks in regular seasons, following Hakeem Olajuwon (3,830).

Mutombo's number 55 jersey was retired by the Hawks and Nuggets, and he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015.
