Former neighbors of Selçuk Tengioğlu, who attacked CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, recounted the brutality that occurred in 2004 and shared what they know about Tengioğlu. Ahmet Öner, a former neighbor of Tengioğlu living in İskenderun, Hatay, pointed out that he believes the attacker will do what he has in mind, as he last saw him two years ago. He stated, "I think one of the hardships of life convinced him to do this."
After the funeral ceremony of the Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) and DEM Party Istanbul Deputy Sırrı Süreyya Önder at the Atatürk Cultural Center in Istanbul, Selçuk Tengioğlu, who attacked CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, was taken into custody and brought to the Taksim Police Station.
IT WAS REVEALED THAT HE HAD KILLED HIS 2 CHILDREN
The Ministry of Interior announced in a statement made via social media that the person who shot and killed his children Barış and Mutlu, aged 19 and 17 in 2004, and injured 2 other children, was sentenced to life imprisonment and was released on conditional parole in 2020.
FORMER NEIGHBORS REVEALED WHAT THEY KNEW: IF HE FIXATED ON SOMETHING, HE WOULD DO IT
The former neighbors of the person who attacked Özel recounted the brutality that occurred in 2004 and what they knew about Tengioğlu. Ahmet Öner, the neighbor from the floor above, explained that on the day Tengioğlu killed his children, his wife was at her father's house and that the incident occurred after family disputes. "We know him from our neighborhood, he was our friend. The events started with family disputes. He invited his wife to the house, and when she didn't come, he went into a crisis, and then unwanted events occurred. If his wife had come home, these events wouldn't have happened. He was fixated; Selçuk was a very different person, if he fixated on something, he would do it. He had problems, he was turning things over in his mind," he said.
"HE WOULD SHAVE THEIR HAIR TO PUNISH THEM"
Önder continued his remarks as follows: "He would wake up in the morning, say he wanted to talk to the children, and line them up in front of him. When he went into a rage, he shot at the 2 children, and the 3rd, my eldest daughter Yasemin, jumped out of the window. She survived with a broken leg, and he also held a knife to Gülşah's throat. At that moment, the police convinced him. This incident occurred due to his rage. He was attached to his home, he had been married for 19 years. He had 2 sons and 3 daughters. After the incident, the family moved to England. He would shave their hair to punish them; no one would think he would kill his children. He was very disciplined and a devoted person to his family, an ideal family head."
"I THINK SOMEONE CONVINCED HIM DUE TO THE HARSHNESS OF LIFE CONDITIONS"
Neighbor Öner stated that he believed Tengioğlu was convinced by someone to attack Özel due to the harshness of life conditions, saying, "At the time of the incident, he was living in Bahar Apartment. They had bought the house themselves, and after the incident, he spent 16 years inside and then came to us. He went to Istanbul saying he would get married and start a family. I couldn't understand why he did this; I think he did it for money to survive. He was extremely jealous. Once he set his mind on something, he would turn it over and do it. If someone told him to do something to himself, he wouldn't do it. I think someone convinced him due to the harshness of life conditions. He had been living in hotels in Beyoğlu for 5 years; Selçuk was not an ordinary person; his life was of good quality," he expressed.
"HE WAS AS NATIONALIST AS ANYONE ELSE"
Mehmet Bahriyeli, a 48-year-old resident of Çay Mahallesi, stated that Tengioğlu had a nationalist personality, saying, "Selçuk was older than us; he used to look after the youth of his neighborhood. He was focused on his own work; he was a taxi driver. He has a 16-year prison history, and like everyone else, he must have had psychological problems. We were surprised; we know that Selçuk was not a person with a specific ideology. He is as nationalist as anyone else, but we do not know if he had a political view," he said.
