Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has canceled the decision to dismiss Ronen Bar, the director of the internal security agency Shin Bet. Bar had previously announced that he would resign on June 15.
After the announcement by Ronen Bar, the Director of Israel's internal security agency Shin Bet (Shabak), that he would resign yesterday, the Binyamin Netanyahu government canceled the decision to dismiss Bar.
According to a report by Israel's state television KAN, Prime Minister Netanyahu wanted to dismiss Shin Bet (Shabak) Director Ronen Bar on grounds of insecurity but was blocked by the Supreme Court, leading the government to abandon the plan to remove Bar.
BAR'S NAME BEHIND THE DECISION
According to the information obtained, this decision was made due to Bar's announcement that he would leave his position on June 15. It was reported that the Netanyahu government aimed to prevent the Supreme Court from making a final decision on the matter by canceling Bar's dismissal.
Until a different decision is made by the Supreme Court, which halted the dismissal of the Shin Bet Director with its ruling in the first hearing on the matter, restrictions on the government's appointment of a new director to the agency will continue.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu attempted to dismiss Shin Bet Director Bar on grounds of insecurity, a move that sparked intense reactions in the country.
The decision was taken to the Supreme Court, and in the first hearing held on April 8, the court issued a temporary injunction preventing Bar's dismissal and the appointment of someone else in his place. In his defense submitted to the court last week, Bar accused Netanyahu of trying to use Shin Bet to defend his own interests.
Netanyahu, on the other hand, accused Bar of causing the biggest intelligence fiasco in the country's history related to October 7, 2023.
Bar, in a statement made at an event held at the Shin Bet headquarters, stated that he took responsibility for the failure on October 7 and expressed that he would resign on June 15.
