During the graduation ceremony of the Army Academy held on August 30, the images of the lieutenants chanting "We are the soldiers of Mustafa Kemal" and swearing with their swords after the protocol left the ceremony area had caused a great stir.
LIEUTENANTS WERE DISCIPLINED
Following the graduation ceremony of the Army Academy, an investigation is ongoing regarding the new graduates' swearing with swords after chanting "We are the soldiers of Mustafa Kemal." Lieutenant Ebru Eroğlu and Lieutenant İzzet Talip Akarsu were referred to disciplinary action with a request for their expulsion. CHP Deputy Chairman Yankı Bağcıoğlu stated that, in addition to Eroğlu and Akarsu, notifications were made for the referral of Lieutenant Serhat Gündar and Lieutenant Deniz Demirtaş to the High Disciplinary Board "for the purpose of imposing a penalty of separation from the TSK."
Fuat Uğur, a writer for Tv.100, shared the questions he sent to the Ministry of National Defense and the responses he received, providing information he obtained regarding the investigation opened against the commanders:
"THEY REPEAT THEIR REQUESTS 7 TIMES"
Starting with Ebru Eroğlu, these lieutenants gathered before the graduation ceremony and went to the school commanders, saying, "We want to read the old oath text at the graduation ceremony." The school commanders responded, "No, this is not possible, you should not do it." The lieutenants went to the school commanders and repeated their requests 7 times. Each time they received a negative response, they said, "Then we will hold an alternative oath ceremony." The organizers were Ebru Eroğlu and 5 friends, no more.
AN INVESTIGATION WAS ALSO OPENED AGAINST THE COMMANDERS
But when I asked about the nearly 300 new graduates who attended that alternative oath ceremony, I received the response: "Because they announced it, those lieutenants excitedly went and participated, not knowing why they were going. They already expressed this to the investigation committee."
"There is also an investigation against them; because despite having this information, they did not take precautions. They could have prevented that chaos in the field and avoided this discussion, but they did not," it was stated.
"THE ISSUE AT HAND IS PURELY A DISCIPLINARY OFFENSE"
I asked whether there is a political connection or motivation behind this, and I received the following answer:
"We are not looking at that. That part of the issue belongs to MIT. We are only addressing the matter as a straightforward disciplinary offense. The real problem is the tarnishing of the TSK's reputation and dragging our army into these discussions. It is very unfortunate that people are starting to talk about 'Is there a division in the TSK?' This investigation has nothing to do with the phrase 'We are the soldiers of Mustafa Kemal' or the content of the alternative oath text. The issue at hand is purely a disciplinary offense."
"THEY WILL SUBMIT THEIR WRITTEN DEFENSES WITHIN 3 DAYS"
Finally, when I asked when they would submit their defenses regarding the upcoming process, it was stated, "Starting from today, they will submit their written defenses within 3 days. After that, they will present their verbal defenses before the disciplinary board with their lawyers. This process will take about a month and a half to 2 months, and it will be completed and concluded by the beginning of the year."
WHAT HAPPENED?
After the graduation ceremony of the Army Academy on August 30, the lieutenants held a sword-swearing ceremony and chanted "We are the soldiers of Mustafa Kemal." The students, led by the top student Ebru Eroğlu, swore in unison with the following words: "We swear that we will stand against any hands that reach out to the independence of the secular, democratic Republic of Turkey, the indivisible integrity of the country, the honor and dignity of the great Turkish nation, and any inch of our sacred homeland. We are the children of the Turkish future. We were born with honor, and we will live with honor. How happy is the one who says I am a Turk!" These images were shared on social media accounts and subsequently became a topic in politics. After the lieutenants' sword-swearing ceremony, there were strong reactions from the ruling side, and an investigation was initiated against the lieutenants. President Erdoğan reacted by saying, "Some exploiters have drawn their swords by appearing. Who are you drawing these swords at? All necessary investigations are currently being conducted regarding this, and those few ignorant ones there will, God willing, be cleaned up."
