"The disaster of the century," referring to the earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023, at 04:17, with the first measuring 7.7 in magnitude, which caused great destruction in 11 provinces, resulting in the loss of tens of thousands of lives and leaving many homeless. New images have emerged regarding these earthquakes. The footage covering the streets, boulevards, and some overpasses in the Dulkadiroğlu and Onikişubat districts of Kahramanmaraş once again revealed the magnitude of the tragedy.
A LIGHT APPEARED IN THE SKY
One of the striking details in the City Security Management System (KGYS) records was the intense bright light that appeared in the sky during the initial moments of the earthquake. Experts state that such lights can occur due to sudden fractures in the Earth's crust and the breaking of electrical lines.
BUILDINGS COLLAPSED IN SECONDS
The footage shows that some buildings were reduced to rubble within a few seconds. Moments were recorded where street lighting poles swayed, a large cloud of dust rose, and people fled in panic. The elevator cameras in the overpasses also captured the earthquake clearly. The shaking inside one elevator showcased the impact of the severe tremor.
SOME CARS WERE CAUGHT IN MOTION
The footage also reflected vehicles in motion in traffic. Some drivers were seen making sudden stops, and some vehicles changed lanes due to the tremors. Additionally, moments when concrete pieces fell on the roads and some traffic lights toppled were also recorded. The newly emerged images serve as a reminder of the magnitude of the February 6 earthquakes while freshening the painful traces of the disaster.
