After the attempted military coup targeting strategic points in Niamey, the capital of Niger, the Nigerien army requested support from the African Corps, affiliated with the Russian Ministry of Defense. Turkey, stating that developments in Niger are being closely monitored, called for restraint and calm.
Military rebellion and violent clashes erupted in Niger's capital Niamey. Russia's Ambassador to Niger Viktor Voropayev announced that the Nigerien army requested assistance from Russia to suppress the rebellion.
NIGER ARMY ASKED RUSSIA FOR HELP TO SUPPRESS THE REBELLION
Speaking to TASS, Voropayev stated that the Nigerien army requested assistance from the African Corps affiliated with the Russian Ministry of Defense to neutralize rebel soldiers at the command of Air Base No. 101, adjacent to Diori Hamani International Airport.
Voropayev noted that young officers from the Tillaberi and Dosso regions were involved in the coup attempt, suggesting these soldiers "may be directed from outside."
TÜRKİYE DECLARED SUPPORT FOR THE NIGERIEN PEOPLE
The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a written statement regarding the military rebellion and violent clashes in Niger.
The statement noted that the violent events in Niger are being closely monitored, saying, "We call for restraint to preserve Niger's security and stability, and we hope that calm is restored as soon as possible."
It was also stated that Türkiye will continue to stand in solidarity with Niger and support the Nigerien people.
SAHEL STATES ALSO SUPPORTED THE GOVERNMENT
The Confederation of Sahel States (AES) announced full support for Niger and its institutions following the military coup attempt in the capital Niamey on the night of August 28.
In a statement by the AES, it was noted that a group of soldiers were involved in actions described as a "destabilization attempt," targeting Air Base No. 101 in the capital and several sensitive locations.
The statement noted that the attempt was brought under control and thwarted by the intervention of Nigerien armed forces, describing the incident as "betrayal."
The statement praised the loyalty, courage, and professionalism of Niger's security and defense forces, noting that the soldiers' commitment to their duties in resisting the coup attempt contributed to restoring order in the capital.
The AES reiterated its full support for Niger's institutions and stated that the struggle to preserve sovereignty and peace would continue alongside the Nigerien administration.
MILITARY REBELLION IN NIGER
Niger's Defense Minister Salifou Mody stated that on the night of August 28-29, a group of soldiers attempted to detain some of their comrades in the barracks at Air Base No. 101 in Niamey and opened fire on strategic points in the capital.
Mody noted that the events were brought under control through the intervention of security forces, and that control over the targeted locations was gradually being restored.
Although Nigerien authorities stated that the coup attempt was brought under control by security forces, some sources claim that full control, especially at Air Base No. 101, has not yet been achieved, and clashes between rebel soldiers and security forces are ongoing.
