The critical decision for the Nissan Altima, which has held an important place in the automotive world for years, has been officially announced. As Nissan prepares to discontinue models with low sales performance under its new strategy, the legendary Altima, which has been on the roads for 34 years, has also been affected by this change.

Japanese automotive giant Nissan is preparing to make significant changes to its product lineup as part of the "Mobility Intelligence for Daily Life" strategy announced at the beginning of the year.

The company had previously stated that it would discontinue models with low sales performance to invest more in electric and next-generation technologies in the future. While it was not specified which models would be affected at the time, the expected announcement has now been made.

NISSAN EXECUTIVE OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED

Ponz Pandikuthira, Head of Product and Planning for Nissan America, confirmed in an interview with Wards Auto that production of the Nissan Altima and Rogue Plug-In Hybrid models will end.

Pandikuthira stated that the Altima, which has held an important place among the brand's sedan models for years, will be replaced by the Sentra model, which is now being positioned more prominently.

WHY IS THE 34-YEAR-OLD NISSAN ALTIMA BEING DISCONTINUED?

Launched in 1992 and one of Nissan's most important models for 34 years, the Altima has seen a significant decline in sales figures in recent years.

According to company data, the model achieved sales of over 200,000 units in the US in 2019, but that number dropped to 92,809 units last year.

In the first six months of 2026, only 42,288 units of the Altima were sold, and it is projected to end the year with approximately 84,600 units sold.

ANOTHER MODEL IS ALSO BEING DISCONTINUED

The Altima will not be the only model Nissan is discontinuing.

The company announced that production of the Rogue Plug-In Hybrid model will also end. Nissan management stated that this model will be replaced by a new-generation version equipped with Rogue e-Power technology.

Pandikuthira noted that the new model will stand out with higher fuel efficiency and a competitive price.
