North Korea Fires Short-Range Missile, South Korea Voices Regret

28.09.2021 12:57

Missile fired eastward from North Korea's Jagang province, says South Korean military.

North Korea fired a short-range missile into the sea off its east coast, South Korea's military said on Tuesday.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the missile was fired eastward from North Korea's Jagang province at around 6: 40 a.m. (2140GMT), Yonhap News Agency reported.

South Korean and US intelligence "are analyzing the launch for additional information," it added.

Top security officials in Seoul met for an emergency meeting after the last missile launch and "voiced regret" over Pyongyang's move, the report said.

President Moon Jae-in has ordered a "comprehensive analysis" of the missile launch and recent statements from the North Korea, the agency "ed his office as saying.

Tensions have been high on the Korean Peninsula after both Pyongyang and Seoul test-launched ballistic missiles just hours apart earlier this month.

The sudden escalation came as the already fraught relations between the neighbors were further strained by joint US and South Korean military drills in August.

However, Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, said last week that North Korea could agree to the South's suggestion to declare a formal end to the Korean War if Seoul drops its "double standards and hostile attitude."
