South Korea announced that North Korea launched a missile from its east coast into the Sea of Japan for the second time this week. The missile flew more than 700 km. Seoul demanded an end to the launches, which violate UN resolutions.
South Korea reported that North Korea launched an unidentified missile towards the Sea of Japan (East Sea) for the second time in a week.
According to Yonhap, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff stated in a statement that an unidentified missile was detected launched from near the city of Wonsan on North Korea's east coast towards the Sea of Japan at around 06:00 local time.
MISSILE TRAVELED MORE THAN 700 KILOMETERS
In the statement, it was reported that the missile, whose type has not yet been determined, traveled more than 700 kilometers, and that North Korea's activities were being closely monitored.
In the South Korean press, it was assessed that due to the distance traveled, the missile could be a short-range ballistic missile.
CALL FROM SOUTH KOREA TO NORTH KOREA
In a statement from the South Korean Presidential Office, it was stated that an "emergency security assessment" meeting was held after the missile launch.
It was noted that the meeting evaluated the responses South Korea could give, as well as the impact of the missile launch on national security. The statement emphasized concern over North Korea launching missiles a few days apart.
In the statement, where North Korea's missile launches were described as "provocations violating United Nations Security Council resolutions," a call was made to the Pyongyang administration to cease missile launches.
SECOND MISSILE IN A WEEK
On August 6, South Korea had also announced that North Korea launched a "short-range ballistic missile" towards the Sea of Japan (East Sea).
