The developer of Flappy Bird, which caused a storm in the mobile gaming world, Dong Nguyen, announced that he is staying away from the re-released version of the game. It was stated that the new venture could include cryptocurrency integrations and that Nguyen does not support this situation. Nguyen Responds to Cryptocurrency ClaimsFlappy Bird, the former game that became a phenomenon in the mobile gaming world in a short time, was recently re-released by a group. Dong Nguyen, the original developer of Flappy Bird, stated that he stays away from this initiative and has no role in the re-release of the game. Nguyen recently made his first post on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) since 2017, claiming that a company bought the commercial rights of the Flappy Bird brand earlier this year and will re-release the game from 2013. Nguyen denied these claims in his post and also added that he does not support cryptocurrencies. On the other hand, a group called "The Flappy Bird Foundation" claimed on September 13 that they acquired the rights of the game from Gametech Holdings LLC and have the necessary rights to re-release the game through legal means. The group also stated that they hope to collaborate with the original developer of the game. When Flappy Bird was released in May 2013, it was a mobile game where players had to navigate a bird through green pipes by tapping on the screen. The game became a viral success in early 2014 and became one of the most downloaded games on Apple's App Store. Nguyen stated that the game was generating $50,000 in daily revenue. When Flappy Bird was at the peak of its popularity, Nguyen withdrew the game from the market and stated that it was because it had become an addictive product. The re-released game is said to be connected to cryptocurrency. Researcher Varun Biniwale shared in a blog post that the game will be launched with a token on the Solana Blockchain network in hidden web pages and will include a "play-to-earn" model. Biniwale also discovered that a prototype contained a "FLAP token" connected to The Open Network (TON) Blockchain network on the loading screen and invited players to connect to a TON wallet for rewards. Michael Roberts wrote on LinkedIn as the studio president of 1208 Production that he led the comeback of Flappy Bird. Roberts, who made a statement about the subject, said that more information about the web pages and the game's cryptocurrency connections will be provided soon. Biniwale stated that the project aims to generate revenue through cryptocurrency and Web3 integration and aims to take advantage of the game's nostalgic appeal.
