The domestic violence incident on Saona Island, one of the world-famous tourist destinations in the Dominican Republic, not only terrified beachgoers but also sparked widespread outrage on social media. During the daytime incident on a crowded beach, a man, reportedly enraged upon seeing his wife talking to another man, threw a jealous fit and launched an attack, all captured on cell phone cameras.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred on Friday, July 3, on Saona Island. Allegedly, the attacker, upon seeing his wife chatting with another man on the beach, entered a severe jealousy crisis. Losing control, the man swiftly moved through the crowd toward the woman's location.
First Attacked the Wrong Woman
In the footage that quickly spread on social media, the attacker initially mistook his wife for another woman. He struck the wrongly targeted woman hard on the head with a slap. The force of the blow immediately collapsed the woman onto the sand, leaving nearby tourists in shock.
Looking at the fallen woman's face, the attacker realized he had assaulted the wrong person. He then promptly turned toward his actual wife's location.
According to the footage, the attacker ran to his wife in the shallow waters and began hitting her with punches and blows. The woman struggled to stay on her feet in the water and tried to escape the attack, watched anxiously by nearby tourists.
Due to the severity of the incident, many news outlets did not share the footage of the actual assault.
Hearing the woman's cries for help, nearby tourists quickly intervened. Several people managed to pull the attacker away from the woman, and the incident soon drew attention from people at different parts of the beach.
As the attacker began moving toward the shore, a man wearing a baseball cap was seen punching him to intervene. Following this, an angry crowd joined in, and the attacker was beaten by multiple people in the sea.
During the ensuing scuffle, other tourists tried to separate the parties to prevent the situation from escalating further.
The Dominican Republic Tourism Police (Politur) announced that an official investigation had been launched following the incident. Authorities stated that the footage of the attack was being reviewed and that eyewitnesses present in the area would be interviewed.
Police also called for additional witnesses who could support the investigation to come forward.
In a statement issued by officials, it was noted that no one had been detained or arrested in connection with the incident so far.
After the attack footage was shared online, thousands of social media users reacted to the incident. Many called for the attacker's identification and swift prosecution.
Users also advocated for stricter penalties against domestic violence cases, with many posts expressing concern that the incident occurred in one of the world's most popular tourist destinations.
