In the Karapınar district of Konya, phone scammers posing as police officers and security personnel convinced a 78-year-old person to cash in gold worth approximately 200,000 lira. The fraud attempt was prevented by the intervention of local shopkeepers who noticed the suspicious behavior of the elderly man who went to a gold dealer to cash in his gold. Those moments at the gold dealer were recorded second by second by a security camera.

According to information obtained, a woman who called 78-year-old Necati Akyıldız, living in the Karapınar district, claimed that he had lost his ID and tried to ensnare him under the pretext of transferring him to a public order unit. Then, the scammers, who claimed that an invoice had been issued in the name of a business owner using Necati Akyıldız's identity, told the elderly man to cash in the gold at his home and said that his son would collect the money obtained. Akyıldız, who panicked after the scammers told him personal details about his identity information and family, did not end the phone call even though he said he had renewed his ID and was unaware of the incident. Following the suspects' instructions, he took the gold worth approximately 200,000 lira at his home and went to the gold dealer.

THE GOLD DEALER'S ATTENTION PREVENTED THE FRAUD

Gold dealer Önder Orman, who became suspicious of the behavior of Necati Akyıldız, who was constantly talking on the phone when he arrived at the shop, realized that the elderly man was about to be scammed. When the person on the phone asked for the gold to be cashed in and the money to be sent via IBAN, Önder Orman intervened and ended the phone call. At that moment, the fraud attempt came to an end when a plainclothes police officer happened to come to the gold dealer as a customer. The gold that Necati Akyıldız brought in a bag was handed back to him without being cashed in. Those moments were recorded second by second by the gold dealer's security camera.

I PANICKED, MY GOLD WAS GOING TO BE LOST

Necati Akyıldız, who said that the scammers' having detailed information about him and his family caused him to fear, said, "While I was sitting at home, a woman called. She said, 'Are you Necati Akyıldız?' They told me that I had lost my ID. They knew everything, down to my family and children. I said, 'I found my ID, I had my ID canceled and got a new ID; my ID is in my hand.' The woman told me, 'We will connect you to a secret intelligence line; that person will ask questions and you will answer.' They asked me one or two questions. They told me to cash in the gold, saying my son would take it. When I came to the jeweler, because I did not understand what the people were saying, I handed it to the friend, and my friend said, 'These are scammers.' At that moment, a plainclothes police officer came here. He took the phone, spoke with them, and hung up. That person was still telling me, 'Don't hang up. Don't hang up until we get within 50 meters; we are going to raid that place.' They gave the gold back. Our citizens who encounter such an incident should not answer the phones and should never believe them. At that moment my brain stopped; I had never encountered such a thing, but it does happen," he said.

I TOLD HIM HE WAS ABOUT TO BE SCAMMED

Gold dealer Önder Orman, describing what happened, stated that Akyıldız's constantly talking on the phone while he wanted to cash in his gold drew his attention, and said, "The elderly uncle came; he was a customer we knew. He wanted to cash in his gold. He was constantly talking on the phone. He put the gold on the table, but the phone was at his ear. I became suspicious and asked who it was; he said he was talking to his son. Then he handed the phone to me. The person on the phone asked me to cash in the gold and send the money via IBAN. I ended the call. I asked the uncle, to whom I said, 'This person is scamming you,' who it was; he said he did not know. We hung up the phone, and I told him that he was about to be scammed. At that moment, a plainclothes police officer came to the shop and spoke on the phone. We realized he was being scammed, gave the gold back to the uncle, and saved him from being scammed," he said.
