While the first unofficial results of the U.S. congressional midterm elections indicate that Democrats have won a majority in both chambers, a noteworthy post came from Elon Musk, who provided hundreds of millions of dollars in support to Republicans. Evaluating the resulting picture with a humorous tone despite his massive spending on election campaigns, Musk said, "Apparently, my space lasers interfering in the elections didn't work this time."
After the congressional midterm elections held in the US on November 3, as vote counting continued, the statement by Elon Musk, one of the Republican Party's biggest financial backers, drew attention. As the Democratic Party gained an advantage in the House of Representatives and the Senate in the initial results, Musk shared a humorous message on X, the platform he owns.
"MY SPACE LASERS DIDN'T WORK THIS TIME"
Evaluating the election results on his personal X account, Musk said, "It seems my space lasers that interfered in the election didn't work this time. "
Musk's humorous post about the election results came after his financial support of hundreds of millions of dollars to Republican candidates.
TRANSFERRED HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO REPUBLICANS
The spending of Musk, who allocated a large amount of resources to the Republican Party's election campaigns, also drew attention. According to The New York Times' analysis, the billionaire businessman transferred $474 million to Republicans before the midterm elections.
In the newspaper's assessment, when politicians who financed their own candidacy campaigns with personal wealth were excluded, it was stated that this amount was the highest donation made by a single person in a single election cycle.
Reuters, however, reported Musk's election spending as $445 million. In the agency's report, it was stated that even the total spending of billionaires supporting the Democratic Party, such as Michael Bloomberg and George Soros, did not reach half of the budget allocated by Musk.
Musk, who announced in August that he planned to spend at least $100 million to support Republican candidates, allocated resources in his election work especially to activities aimed at increasing voter turnout.
DEMOCRATS PULLED AHEAD IN BOTH CHAMBERS
In the midterm elections held in the US on November 3, votes were cast for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 seats in the 100-member Senate. Voters also went to the polls to determine the governors of 36 states, members of state legislatures, and local officials.
According to unofficial data shared by the election analysis platform Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ), Democrats reached 228 seats in the House and 54 seats in the Senate. Republicans remained at 139 seats in the House and 44 seats in the Senate.
While it was noted that completing the vote count nationwide could take several days, it was emphasized that the initial figures announced were not final election results.
