Sanchez, emboldened by Trump's defeat: Spain is next

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez argued that following the midterm election results in the US, right-wing and far-right politics have begun to lose strength worldwide. Citing the election results in Brazil and the US as examples, Sanchez sent a message to the right-wing opposition in his country, saying, "It happened in Brazil, now it has happened in the US, and soon it will happen in Spain too."

The results of the US congressional midterm elections held on November 3 also resonated in Europe. Evaluating the Democratic Party's success in the elections, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez argued that the results were important not only for US politics but also for international political balances. In his statement on November 4, Sanchez cited the election results in Brazil and the US and claimed that a similar change would also occur in Spain.

"THE FAR-RIGHT WAVE IS NO LONGER GROWING; IT IS COLLAPSING"

In a post on his X account after the US election results, Sanchez argued that American voters had voted against the policies of the Trump administration.

The Spanish Prime Minister claimed that US voters had taken a stand against policies they believe increase poverty, against hatred, sexism, climate change denial, and the privileges granted to elites.

Sanchez used the following statements in his statement:

"It happened in Brazil. Now it has happened in the US. Soon it will happen in Spain too."

Addressing the opposition leaders in Spain, Alberto Nunez Feijoo and Santiago Abascal, Sanchez assessed, "The far-right wave that Feijoo and Abascal are trying to join is no longer growing; it is collapsing."

HE POINTED TO THE DEFEAT OF TRUMP'S PARTY AS AN EXAMPLE

In the US midterm elections, the Democrats made significant gains against the Republicans and took control of Congress. The election results led to a change in political balances during the remaining part of President Donald Trump's second term.

Sanchez, for his part, viewed the Democrats' success as a development supporting his view that right-wing parties are losing power internationally.

The Spanish Prime Minister's statements came weeks before the early general elections to be held in his country on November 29.

HE ALSO REMINDED OF THE ELECTION RESULT IN BRAZIL

Another country Sanchez pointed to in his statement was Brazil. In the second round of the presidential election held in Brazil on October 25, left-wing Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva defeated his rival Flavio Bolsonaro and was re-elected.

After Lula's victory, Sanchez made similar statements and argued that progressive politics had begun to regain strength internationally.

After the US election results, the Spanish Prime Minister repeated the same assessment, claiming that the political change that began in Brazil continued in the US and would also be reflected in Spain.

EYES ON SPAIN'S NOVEMBER 29 ELECTIONS

In the early general elections to be held in Spain on November 29, political parties, primarily Sanchez's Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), Alberto Nunez Feijoo's People's Party (PP), and Santiago Abascal's Vox, will compete.

While Sanchez argues that the US election results could also affect the political atmosphere in Spain, it is noted that this assessment is not yet based on an election result. However, the extent to which the results in the US and Brazil will affect Spanish voters' preferences remains uncertain.

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares also, in his statement evaluating the Democrats' success in the US, said he believed that the political change he thought began in Brazil and continued in the US would also be seen in Spain.
