Fenerbahçe, who will face Lyon in the Champions League play-off round, applied to the Turkish Football Federation to postpone their Trendyol Süper Lig first-week match against Gençlerbirliği. Football director Oğuz Çetin announced that the TFF rejected the postponement request.
Fenerbahçe, who entered the Champions League qualifiers in the second round, advanced to the play-off round. The yellow-navy team was paired with French side Lyon in this round. Fenerbahçe will play their first match against Lyon on Tuesday, August 18, at Kadıköy.
TO OPEN THE SEASON IN THE SUPER LEAGUE AWAY TO GENÇLERBİRLİĞİ
Before their Champions League match against Lyon, Fenerbahçe will play their first match of the new season in the Trendyol Super League. The yellow-navy team will face Gençlerbirliği away on Saturday, August 15, in the first match of the 2026-2027 season in the Trendyol Super League.
Fenerbahçe had applied to the Turkish Football Federation to postpone the match. Football director Oğuz Çetin announced the federation's decision.
TFF REJECTED THE POSTPONEMENT REQUEST
In his statement to FBTV, Oğuz Çetin announced that the TFF rejected the request to postpone the match against Gençlerbirliği.
Çetin explained the reason for the postponement request and his views on the decision with the following words:
"We asked the TFF to postpone the Gençlerbirliği match. The reason we asked for its postponement is not the Gençlerbirliği match. We will play away, and right after, 2 days later, we will play the Lyon match. The medical gathering of players, the tactical process... We haven't participated in the Champions League for 17 years; it's both a sporting and financial process. Unfortunately, the Gençlerbirliği match was not postponed. This year, no matter what comes our way, everyone will see that we will walk with determination."
