The President of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, stated that they aim to help Syria rebuild its institutions so that it can integrate into the world economy.
Georgieva mentioned during a press conference held as part of the IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings that they had a meeting with Syria this week.
"THEY CAN INTEGRATE INTO THE WORLD ECONOMY"
Noting that the Governor of the Central Bank and the Minister of Finance from Syria attended the Spring Meetings for the first time in over 20 years, Georgieva said, "Our intention, above all, is to help them rebuild their institutions so that they can integrate into the world economy."
"WE HAVE STARTED TO ASSESS"
Jihad Azour, Director of the IMF Middle East and Central Asia Department, also made evaluations regarding the discussions with Syria during a press conference held about the economies of the Middle East and Central Asia.
Pointing out that Syria has not been present on the international stage for the last 15 years due to war, Azour stated that the country's interaction with the institution has been quite limited since 2011. He recalled that the IMF conducted its last Article IV consultation with Syria in 2009.
Azour noted that the international community has actively intervened to see how Syria can recover after a prolonged war, stating that they held a preparatory meeting in February, and regional institutions and the international community agreed to hold the next follow-up and coordination meeting.
Azour mentioned that the coordination meeting was also held on Tuesday, explaining that representatives of international institutions came together to assess Syria's needs and develop a coordination framework.
Jihad Azour said, "The Fund has engaged in the process to support the international community and its interaction with Syria. We have already started our assessment of the macroeconomic situation and institutional capacity, and we look forward to continuing our contacts with Syrian officials."
