Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş made statements to the press after the Cabinet Meeting at the Presidential Complex. Göktaş reminded that the Year of Family was first declared internationally by the United Nations in 1994 and that May 15 has been celebrated as International Family Day for 30 years, and explained the work done in this context. Emphasizing the importance they attach to the "family" issue with the work they have done since taking office, Göktaş stated that they held the 8th Family Council and implemented the 'Vision Document and Action Plan for the Protection and Strengthening of the Family' using the council's outputs. Göktaş pointed out that this action plan, covering the years 2024-2028, is the first of its kind in the history of the Republic, stating, "Following our President's statements at the UN podium that 'Protecting the family is to protect humanity and its future,' we have also achieved such a first. As our President announced after the Cabinet meeting this year, we are realizing another first for the protection and strengthening of the family." "WE ARE A NATION WITH STRONG FAMILY BONDS AND SOLIDARITY"Minister Göktaş emphasized that the Turkish nation has a special sensitivity towards the issue of "family," stating, "We are a nation with strong family bonds and solidarity. However, it is a fact that we are experiencing some social changes, especially in recent times, influenced by certain global dynamics, and our family is also affected by these changes. There is no doubt that as a state, we need to take necessary actions against these developments that affect the unity, integrity, and welfare of our family and directly concern the future of our society. Therefore, strengthening the integrity and functionality of the family institution and ensuring the peace, happiness, and welfare of family members is critically important for our future," he stated. HEALTHY FAMILIES WILL BE ENCOURAGEDPointing out that while marriage rates and fertility rates are decreasing in Turkey, the number of divorces, the age of first marriage, the age of becoming a mother for the first time, the number of single-parent families, the number of individuals living alone, and the proportion of the elderly population are increasing, Göktaş stated, "While marriage rates are decreasing, the number of those who have never married is also significantly increasing. This critical picture regarding the population highlights the importance of strengthening our family, among other issues. Strengthening our family and encouraging the establishment of healthy families where healthy generations will be raised is among our priorities as a Ministry. Based on all this, we declare 2025 as the 'Year of Family' with the high appreciation of our President, as a process in which we will elevate all our efforts regarding the family issue." ERDOĞAN WILL ANNOUNCE GOOD NEWS ON JANUARY 13Continuing his words, Minister Göktaş said, "We will have good news that will directly touch the lives of our citizens in the 'Year of Family'," and continued: "We will be by the side of our citizens with all our institutions of the state to ensure that this year is one in which they will feel the happiness of being a family and living securely within a family. I wish that the good news we will announce on January 13, which will be detailed by our President, and the events we will hold throughout the year in the 'Year of Family' will be beneficial for our country and our nation. I invite all segments of our society to share the happiness of this meaningful year with their families."
