Prof. Dr. Serap Durusoy, who made striking statements about inflation and the pension system in Turkey, expressed that fundamental steps need to be taken to solve the problems. Stating that Turkey has the lowest pension payments among European Union countries, Durusoy evaluated the economic management's fiscal discipline policies. DEFICIENCIES IN TURKEY'S PENSION SYSTEMProf. Dr. Serap Durusoy stated that Turkey ranks low in the global pension index. "Turkey has the lowest pension among European countries. The needs of retirees are not met in any area. This indicates that our social security system needs to be restructured," she said. INFLATION: TURKEY'S CHRONIC PROBLEMStating that inflation has been one of Turkey's chronic problems for many years, Durusoy said, "Even when inflation decreases, the cost of living does not immediately end. High inflation seriously affects the purchasing power of citizens. In 2025, internal and external dynamics will be decisive in the course of inflation," she stated. EMPHASIS ON FISCAL DISCIPLINE AND PRODUCTIONPointing out the fiscal discipline policy of economic management, Durusoy said, "The suppression of wages is seen as a short-term method to reduce inflation. However, promoting production in the long term is essential." She noted that issues such as hidden unemployment in the public sector need to be addressed and stated that the wages of civil servants and retirees should be improved. EXPECTATIONS FOR 2025Durusoy indicated that she expects a moderate trend in inflation in the early months of the year, emphasizing that it is not possible to solve economic problems without fundamental reforms.
