UKRAINE WAR ON THE MEETING'S AGENDA
Witkoff and Kushner came to Moscow as part of a new initiative to end the war in Ukraine. After the US envoys' meeting with Putin, they are expected to travel to Kiev on Sunday. AP reported that this visit would be the first time the two figures travel to Kiev as part of the peace process.
On Friday, Trump announced that Witkoff and Kushner were carrying a proposal to end the war during their visits to Moscow and Kiev. According to Reuters, Washington's initiative aims to reinvigorate peace efforts that have stalled for some time.
PUTIN: "THE SITUATION IS NOT SIMPLE"
At the start of the meeting, Putin said he was pleased to host Witkoff and Kushner in Moscow. Noting that the situation in Ukraine is not easy, Putin asked them to convey his best wishes and thanks to Trump.
Putin also told the US envoys that contacts between Russia and the US are beneficial and that Moscow finds it appropriate to work with Witkoff and Kushner.
TRUMP'S GREETINGS CONVEYED
According to Reuters, Witkoff said during the meeting that Trump sent his best wishes to Putin. He also thanked Putin for the ceasefire announced during the US delegation's visit. Putin, in turn, stated that Russia would do everything in its power to ensure the safety of the mediators.
MOSCOW AND KIEV PAUSE MUTUAL ATTACKS
One of the notable points of the meeting was the parties' temporary halt of attacks on each other's capitals. According to AP, Putin ordered a three-day halt to attacks on Kiev. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also announced they were ready to pause attacks on Moscow for the same period.
However, AP noted that air strikes between Russia and Ukraine continued while talks were underway, and that the latest attacks resulted in casualties in Ukraine.
