Qassam Claims To Capture Israeli Drone İn Gaza

25.08.2014 17:33

The Ezzeddin al Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Palestinian resistance faction Hamas, announced Monday that it had captured an Israeli aerial drone in the Gaza Strip.

The Ezzeddin al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Palestinian resistance faction Hamas, announced Monday that it had captured an Israeli aerial drone in the Gaza Strip.

In a brief statement, the group said its fighters had managed to capture the unmanned aircraft in eastern Gaza City's Shujaya neighborhood.

It gave no further details.

The group also posted six seconds of video footage on its website that claimed to show part of the captured drone.

It is not the first time the Brigades has claimed to have captured an Israeli drone.

Last November, the group said it had seized an Israeli "Casper" drone in the town of Jabalia in the northeastern Gaza Strip.

Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee, for his part, denied the group's latest assertions, saying the drone had crashed in the coastal strip due to a technical malfunction.

During Israel's 2012 onslaught on the Gaza Strip, Al-Qassam said it had managed to seize one of two Israeli drones that its fighters had shot down.

Israel resumed airstrikes across the Gaza Strip last week following the collapse of indirect, Egypt-hosted talks aimed at hammering out a durable ceasefire arrangement.

While Israel accused Hamas of breaking a temporary truce with a rocket barrage, the Palestinian faction accused the self-proclaimed Jewish state of attempting to derail the truce talks in Cairo.

At least 2130 Palestinians have been killed and more than 10,870 others injured in relentless Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip since hostilities began on July 7.

Over the same period, at least 68 Israelis – 64 soldiers and four civilians – have been killed, according to Israeli figures.

The number of Palestinian fatalities from Israel's current offensive has now surpassed the combined death toll from two previous operations against Gaza, including Israel's "Operation Cast Lead" in 2008/09 in which at least 1500 Palestinians were killed over three weeks.
