In an assessment regarding the earthquakes measuring 3.9 and 4.2 that occurred in succession in the Gemlik district of Bursa and were also felt in Yalova and Istanbul, earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan stated, "This is a very ordinary earthquake. There is a destructive earthquake awaiting the Gemlik Gulf, but its magnitude will not exceed 6.4. Therefore, there is currently no hazardous situation."

According to the data from the AFAD Earthquake Department, a 3.9 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Gemlik district of Bursa at 11:47, followed by another earthquake of 4.2 magnitude at 12:57. The tremors, which were also felt in Yalova and Istanbul, caused fear among the citizens. Geophysicist Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan, who evaluated the situation, stated that the tremors are normal and emphasized that there is no need to panic.
"IT IS A NORMAL EARTHQUAKE"
Prof. Dr. Ercan stated in a statement made through his social media account: "Today, there has been a M4.0 magnitude earthquake at a depth of 5 km in Bursa Gemlik. The fault where this earthquake occurred is the second branch of the North Anatolian Fault. The earthquake occurred on the Gemlik-Iznik branch. There are three branches of the KAK in Marmara. The North Marmara branch goes from Gölcük to Istanbul and then to the Saros Gulf. The other branch extends from Akyazı, through Pamukova to Gemlik and then to Bandırma. The other South branch extends from Yenişehir through Bursa to Mustafa Kemal Paşa and then to Lake Manyas; the most active one is the northern branch. Then comes the Bursa branch. The least active one is the Gemlik branch. The earthquake that occurred today is the smallest earthquake that has happened on the Gemlik branch. It is a very normal earthquake.
"NO HAZARDOUS SITUATION IS OBSERVED"
After this, it is necessary not to spread the fear of a larger earthquake coming because there is currently no scientific data on that matter. In the future, there is naturally an expected destructive earthquake in the Gemlik Gulf, but its magnitude will not exceed M6.2-6.4. Therefore, there is no hazardous situation observed at the moment."
