Istanbul was once again shaken by a magnitude 4 earthquake that occurred in the Sea of Marmara. Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür stated that the earthquake took place on the Kumburgaz fault, which is likely to rupture, and that small stress field changes continue on this fault. Geophysicist Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan also mentioned that the earthquake was an expected aftershock and that there is no cause for concern.
Residents of Istanbul, shaken by the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred on April 23, continue to experience the fear of earthquakes up close.
EARTHQUAKE OF MAGNITUDE 4 IN ISTANBUL
According to the latest data from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), another earthquake of magnitude 4 occurred off the coast of Büyükçekmece in the Sea of Marmara. The tremor, recorded at 23:36, occurred at a depth of 8.16 kilometers. The distance of the earthquake from the shore was determined to be 23 kilometers. On the other hand, the Kandilli Observatory announced the magnitude of the earthquake as 4.2.
GÖRÜR: ON A FAULT LINE THAT MAY BREAK
Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür, in his first statement made via social media after the earthquake, said, "A 4.2 earthquake occurred between Silivri and Büyükçekmece. This earthquake is on the Kumburgaz fault line, which may break. Since April 23, small stress field changes have been continuing on this fault. Get well soon."
ERCAN: NO PROBLEM
Geophysics expert Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan also stated, "The 4.2 is an expected aftershock. There is no problem."
