At least 36 workers lost their lives in an attack by rebels on a mine in the town of Banango, located in the North Kivu province in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
According to reports in the Democratic Republic of the Congo press, members of the rebel group known as the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) carried out an armed attack on the Angola 1 and Angola 2 mine sites located in the town of Banango in the eastern part of the country.
AT LEAST 36 PEOPLE HAVE DIED
In the attack, ADF members, who killed at least 36 people, took several workers hostage and moved away from the area. After the attack, many civilians left their homes to reach safe areas. Following the incident, security forces launched operations in the region.
THOUSANDS HAVE DIED IN 10 YEARS
The ADF, which has been active in Uganda and the DRC since the late 1990s, was formed by the merging of former members of movements such as the Uganda National Liberation Army (NALU), the Uganda Muslim Liberation Army, and the Tabliq Community.
It is reported that thousands of civilians have been killed in ADF attacks since 2014, and hundreds of thousands have been displaced.
