Şara appointed 4 names from a Turkish university as deputies

In the 70-member People's Assembly list announced by Syrian President Ahmed Al-Shara, Dr. Abdulhamit Alawak, a faculty member at Mardin Artuklu University (MAÜ), along with three of his students, were included.

As part of the transition process in Syria, the appointment of 70 members, constituting one-third of the People's Assembly, was announced by President Ahmed Al-Shara on July 1, 2026. The list, which aims to bring together different segments of society and experts, includes four names from Mardin Artuklu University.

FACULTY MEMBER AND 3 STUDENTS APPOINTED AS DEPUTIES

To the founding assembly that will serve in Syria's reconstruction process; Dr. Abdulhamit Alawak, faculty member of the Department of Political Science and International Relations at MAU, 2026 graduates Ahmet Zeydan, and continuing students Mahir Alluş and Yasir Delwan were appointed as deputies.

MAU Rector Prof. Dr. İbrahim Özcoşar made evaluations regarding the appointment of university members to the Syrian People's Assembly. Özcoşar stated, "We are proud that our University members are included in the list of 70 deputies announced by President Ahmed Al-Shara on July 1, 2026, in Syria. We congratulate constitutional law expert and faculty member of our University's Department of Political Science and International Relations, Dr. Abdulhamit Alawak; our 2026 graduate Mr. Ahmet Zeydan, and our current students Mr. Mahir Alluş and Mr. Yasir Delwan for their duties in the People's Assembly, and we wish them success in Syria's reconstruction process."

In the 70-member quota appointed by President Al-Shara in the Syrian People's Assembly, 47 academicians and experts from various fields are included. Among the appointed members, there are 17 individuals with doctoral degrees.

THEY WILL SERVE FOR 30 MONTHS

The new People's Assembly, which will serve for 30 months in accordance with the constitution, will hold its first session on Monday, July 6. After the members take the oath during the meeting, the Assembly Presidency Council will be elected, and a commission to prepare the internal regulations will be formed.
