Halil Ünler, the owner of a defense industry company in Ankara, went to a private hospital in Sincan on July 26 for routine check-ups. Ünler was told that his heart valves were deteriorating and underwent angiography followed by bypass surgery. He was discharged on July 30 but returned to the same hospital on August 2 with a feeling of fainting, and a pacemaker was implanted on August 5.
DEATH NEWS ANNOUNCED IN THE AFTERNOON
After the operation, Ünler stood up and fainted while he was alone in the room. After his tomography was taken and he was admitted to the intensive care unit, it was stated that his heart stopped in the morning and intervention was performed; the news of his death was announced in the afternoon. Halil Ünler's daughter, Merve Ünler Yılmaz, held the hospital responsible for her father's death and filed a criminal complaint against the hospital. An investigation was initiated by the Ankara West Republic Prosecutor's Office regarding the incident. The exact cause of Ünler's death will be revealed after the autopsy.
"NO HEART PROBLEM 2 MONTHS AGO"
Merve Ünler Yılmaz, Halil Ünler's daughter, claimed that the doctors misdiagnosed her father, stating, "They called us at 8:00 am yesterday and told us that his heart had stopped. We couldn't reach anyone from the intensive care unit, the chief physicians, or our doctor. There is no one we can talk to except for security and cleaning staff. After the nurse removed his catheter, she left my father alone in the room, and he hit his head on the mirror in the bathroom and fell to the ground. After that, they took him to the intensive care unit in that condition. They told us at 10:00 am that we had the right to see our father in the intensive care unit. They also prevented us from doing that. Thanks to my lawyer, we were able to see my father. Two months ago, my father had an angiography at another hospital, and he didn't have any heart problems at that time. The doctor at that time didn't mention anything about his heart valve. But this doctor said that my father's heart valve was deteriorating and if he didn't undergo emergency surgery, he wouldn't be able to continue his life. They sent us home two days after the surgery, and my father's heart stopped at home. We are leaving the hospital with his funeral after coming here on foot, we are very sad. I have filed and will continue to file all kinds of complaints against the hospital."
"FINANCIAL INTERESTS WERE PRIORITIZED"
Serdar Can, the lawyer of the Ünler family, said, "My client came to the hospital for a completely different condition, and due to the fact that it is a private hospital, he was asked to undergo surgery for completely different reasons, prioritizing financial interests. Afterwards, my client was operated on by taking advantage of this situation. Unfortunately, the current situation occurred as a result of the surgery. We believe that the hospital and the doctors who performed this surgery committed a crime by abusing their duties. Therefore, we will follow the process both criminally and legally."
HOSPITAL STATEMENT
In the statement made by the hospital, it was stated that "Our patient who applied to our hospital and had a history of heart disease was found to still have a heart condition during the examinations and consultations, and an open-heart surgery was performed on July 26, 2024, with the consent of the patient and his relatives. After a successful operation, our patient was discharged in good health on July 30, 2024. On August 2, 2024, our patient, who applied to our emergency department with a feeling of fainting, was examined by our cardiovascular surgeons and cardiologists, and was taken to the angiography unit to have a temporary pacemaker implanted due to arrhythmia, and a temporary pacemaker was successfully implanted. After being followed up in the coronary intensive care unit, our patient was admitted to the clinical service on August 3, 2024, and a planning was made by our cardiologists to implant a permanent pacemaker, which was successfully implanted on August 5, 2024. In the evening of the same day, our patient got up and went to the bathroom without informing the healthcare staff and without support, and fainted. Upon this, our cardiologist re-examined the patient and requested a tomography. After the tomography was taken, our doctors intervened and admitted the patient to the intensive care unit. Here, our doctors examined both the pacemaker and the patient and performed the necessary interventions."
