Last night, the Deputy Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly and member of the DEM Party İmralı delegation, Sırrı Süreyya Önder, suffered a heart attack at his home in Istanbul. His 12-hour surgery has been completed. In the first statement from the hospital regarding Önder, it was stated that "Sırrı Süreyya Önder's life-threatening condition continues."
LETTER FROM DEMİRTAŞ TO ÖNDER
Many figures from the political world shared get well messages for Önder, but one of the most notable statements came from former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş, who is imprisoned in Edirne Prison. Demirtaş, who first brought to light that Önder suddenly fell ill during his last prison visit and held his heart, reported that the experienced politician stepped out into the corridor to get some fresh air.
"YOUR ONLY WISH IS TO SEE PEACE BEFORE YOU DIE"
In the letter Selahattin Demirtaş wrote for Önder, the following expressions were included; "Being a peace ambassador is a difficult task. Beyond all political calculations; you put your heart on the line so that mothers and fathers do not suffer the pain of losing their children, but most of the time this is not appreciated. They will tear you apart, they will wear your heart out, they will try to play with your honor. But if you are faithfully committed to peace, you do not take a step back, you never give up. Your only wish is to see peace before you die."
"THERE IS NO DEATH FOR US WITHOUT SOLVING THIS PEACE ISSUE"
We were on a prison visit. Mr. Sırrı suddenly fell ill, his color drained, he held his heart. We panicked, some tried to call an ambulance, but he did not allow it. He stepped out into the corridor to get some fresh air. Our eyes filled with tears with Ahmet Türk and Pervin Buldan, as we tried to maintain the elegance of our conversation about peace in the narrow prison visiting room, Mr. Sırrı, trying to wear the joy of all past times, said, "Ahmet Abi, there is no death for us without solving this peace issue! We promised at our entrance, 'first peace, if we die, it is God's command.'"
"MR. SIRRI WILL GET BACK ON HIS FEET"
Mr. Sırrı went outside in that condition and made a statement in front of Edirne Prison saying, "we are walking around with our hearts in our hands," which was indeed true. Everyone, Kurdish and Turkish alike, should know that this big-hearted child of the Turkish people has worked beyond what is known for peace, has put in a lot of effort, has never acted ugly, and has not thought cheaply. He was very hurt by unjust attacks and insults, but he persevered on the path of peace, swallowing all of it. For this reason, his memory, value, and worth are very great.
