The life struggle of Lillian Smart, an 8-year-old living in the US, which began after an ordinary lake trip, ended in tragic news. It was assessed that the little girl, living in the town of Ruston in the US state of Louisiana, came into contact with a microscopic amoeba called Naegleria fowleri while swimming in Lake Claiborne near her home.
The Louisiana Department of Health announced that a rare infection was detected in a person in the region and that the case most likely developed while swimming in Lake Claiborne. Lillian's family and local sources later confirmed that the patient was the little girl.

Lillian Smart was admitted to the hospital on August 15. According to information shared by her family, the infection caused severe swelling and damage to her brain.
Despite all the doctors' interventions, the little girl's health condition did not improve. Lillian passed away shortly after celebrating her eighth birthday. Her family stated that the damage to her brain was too severe for her body to recover.
The brain-eating amoeba is a type of single-celled microscopic amoeba that can live especially in warm fresh water. Lakes, rivers, ponds, and hot springs are among the environments where the organism can be found.
