In the city of Tangerang, Indonesia, a 36-year-old father has been found to have sold his newborn baby for £700 (approximately 26,000 TL) via Facebook. The police stated that the man used the money for gambling. The incident came to light when the baby's mother returned home and could not find her child. Under pressure, the father confessed to selling the baby. Police chief Zain Dwi Nugroho stated, "The man contacted a couple looking for a baby on Facebook and arranged the sale." The police found the baby in a house in Tangerang and arrested two more individuals on suspicion of human trafficking. The criminals face up to 15 years in prison and a fine of 600 million rupiah (approximately 1,125,000 TL) under Indonesian law. Ai Maryati, the head of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission, said, "There can be no excuse for treating children this way, and violations of their rights must be punished severely." This incident highlights that child trafficking is a serious problem in Indonesia. In recent weeks, a similar baby trafficking ring was also dismantled in the city of Depok. Authorities are warning the public against such illegal sales conducted through social media and state that they will continue to combat these crimes.
