In the Neurosurgery Department of Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University Training and Research Hospital, a dispute broke out yesterday afternoon between Dr. Burak Yürük (34) and his patient T.S. (62) for reasons yet unknown.

During the argument, T.S. stabbed Yürük four times in the head and various parts of his body. T.S. was subdued by the intervention of security personnel. Police teams, alerted by the incident, detained the suspect. Yürük was treated in the hospital's emergency department. It was reported that Dr. Yürük's health condition is improving, and he had previously performed brain surgery on T.S.

Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu expressed his wishes for a speedy recovery to his valuable colleague Burak Yürük, who was injured in the attack, in a post on his social media account. "I conveyed my get well wishes after speaking with him. Thank God, his health condition is good. We stand against all forms of violence against our healthcare workers. We will personally follow the legal process," he stated.

The Turkish Medical Association (TTB) condemned the attack on the doctor. A statement was made on the association's social media account: "We regret to learn that our colleague, who works at Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University Training and Research Hospital, was attacked with a knife by a patient he had previously operated on. We condemn the attack and send our best wishes to our colleague. We know that the healthcare system, which pits doctors and healthcare workers against patients and their relatives, is one of the main causes of violent incidents. It is clear that the healthcare system needs to be reorganized with a public and community-oriented understanding. Our proposed bill prepared by TTB should be brought to the agenda of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and enacted, and preventive measures in healthcare environments should be implemented as soon as possible. Another healthcare system, a violence-free healthcare environment is possible."
