Some subscribers' bills may double.

Some subscribers' bills may double.

27.12.2024 10:41

A new era is beginning in electricity bills. Starting from February, those with high electricity consumption will pay more. Since subsidies for bills exceeding 417 kilowatt-hours (approximately 1,050 TL) will be removed, actual costs will be reflected. In this case, the amount some subscribers pay could increase by up to two times.

As of February 2025, the "pay as you consume" period for electricity begins. A limit of 417 kilowatt-hours will be accepted for this. Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar stated that they are working to remove the subsidized price for high-consumption residential subscribers and that these subscribers will purchase electricity at the real price after February.

"THEY WILL START PAYING THE REAL COST"

Answering journalists' questions about electricity tariffs before the AK Party's parliamentary group meeting, Bayraktar said, "With the latest regulation made by the EPDK, citizens with a consumption of more than twice the monthly limit, that is, 417 kilowatt-hours, will start paying the real cost of electricity after February. This regulation is essentially what it is." he said.

IT AFFECTS SUBSCRIBERS PAYING ABOVE 1,050 LIRA

Minister Bayraktar stated that the average electricity bill for a household in Turkey is 414 lira. According to the information provided by Bayraktar, if a subscriber's monthly bill exceeds 1,050 lira, they will start purchasing electricity at its "real cost."

HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL BE AFFECTED BY THE REGULATION?

Bayraktar emphasized that there are approximately 40 million residential subscribers in Turkey, and that 3% of them, or 1.2 million subscribers, will be affected by this situation. "These are, as I mentioned, high consumption groups, those with large homes, those who use more electrical appliances in their homes, and perhaps those who have electric vehicles; these groups will also pay for electricity in a way that is more cost-effective. The regulation includes this," he said.
