South Africa Records 437 New COVID-19 Cases, 37 Deaths

07.04.2021 09:57

Total number of vaccines administered is 272,438, says health minister.

South Africa on Tuesday reported 437 new COVID-19 cases and 37 related deaths, the country's health minister said.

The new numbers pushed the caseload to over 1.55 million, including 53,032 deaths and 1.47 million recoveries, Zwelini Mkhize said on Twitter.

The total number of vaccines administered is 272,438, he said, adding that over 9.9 million coronavirus tests have been conducted to date.

South Africa, a country of nearly 60 million people, started vaccinating health care workers late February.

The vaccination campaign was dealt a blow when it put on hold a plan to start inoculations with Oxford-AstraZeneca's vaccine.

The government then switched to the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which was approved for general use on March 31. -
