Spanish, Danish Premiers Arrive In Ukraine's Capital

21.04.2022 13:56

Pedro Sanchez, Mette Frederiksen to hold talks with Ukrainian president.

Spanish and Danish Prime Ministers Pedro Sanchez and Mette Frederiksen arrived in Ukraine's capital Kyiv on Thursday.

They are set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later in the day.

The leaders will discuss how to further support Ukraine and the prosecution of "war crimes and human rights violations," according to the Danish Prime Ministry.

"Ukraine has the support, solidarity and commitment of Spain," Sanchez wrote on Twitter upon his arrival in Kyiv.

This is the first time a Scandanavian or southern European leader has visited Ukraine since the war broke out in late February.

Sanchez has already met with the famed Spanish chef, Jose Andres, whose NGO World Central Kitchen is serving hot meals across the war-torn nation.

In recent days, several of the organization's workers have been injured in missile attacks in Yaposhka and Kharkiv.

"Pedro Sanchez's and Spain's support for the Ukrainian people and its president in their fight for freedom and democracy is incredibly important," Andres said on Twitter.

The Spanish and Danish prime ministers are also visiting the town of Borodyanka, where Russian forces have left behind a scene "significantly more dreadful" than in nearby Bucha, according to Zelenskyy.

"In Bucha our humanity was shattered," said European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen after visiting mass graves in the city alongside the EU's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell earlier this month. -
