EPDK has changed the conditions for benefiting from state support on electricity bills. Starting from January 1, 2027, residential subscribers with annual electricity consumption of 3,000 kilowatt-hours or more will be excluded from the scope of state support. Subscribers exceeding this limit, which corresponds to an average monthly consumption of 250 kilowatt-hours and a bill of approximately 820 lira, will use electricity at its real cost and face higher bills. Approximately 6.5 million subscribers are expected to be affected by the new regulation.
The Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) determined the electricity consumption limit to be applied in 2027 at today's Board meeting.
According to the decision, the threshold for benefiting from the state-supported electricity tariff for residential subscribers was set at 3 thousand kilowatt-hours annually. This amount corresponds to an average monthly consumption of 250 kilowatt-hours. When calculated at current prices, subscribers with an average monthly electricity bill of approximately 820 lira or more will be removed from the scope of state support if their annual consumption exceeds the specified limit. The new regulation will enter into force on January 1, 2027.
IT WILL AFFECT 6.5 MILLION SUBSCRIBERS
There are approximately 44.2 million residential subscribers in Turkey. According to EPDK data, with the new regulation, approximately 6.5 million residential subscribers will be included in the high-consumption consumer group. This number corresponds to approximately 14.7 percent of total residential subscribers.
SUBSCRIBERS EXCEEDING THE LIMIT WILL NOW PAY MORE
EPDK announced that no change was made to the national electricity tariff with the decision. The regulation envisages that subscribers exceeding the specified annual consumption limit will be removed from the state-supported tariff and obtain electrical energy at actual costs. Therefore, the decision does not mean a general electricity increase for all subscribers. However, there may be an increase in the bills of subscribers who exceed the consumption limit.
WHO WILL CONTINUE TO BENEFIT FROM STATE SUPPORT?
In the new regulation, some consumer groups were excluded from the scope. Mosques, places of worship, Cem houses, and associations in the residential subscriber group will not be affected by the regulation. In addition, families of martyrs, combat veterans and disabled veterans, village drinking water, temporary accommodation centers belonging to AFAD, and consumers dependent on electrically operated dialysis support units, respiratory devices, and similar life-support devices will also be exempt from the regulation.
Since the consumption limit applied in the agricultural activities group has not been changed, consumers engaged in agricultural activities will also not be affected by the new decision. No change was made to the annual 15 thousand kilowatt-hour limit set for the industry, public and private services sector, and lighting subscriber groups.
