An announcement came from the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the appointment of supervisory trustees to 13 companies in an operation conducted on the grounds that they violated the free competition environment in the white meat sector and caused unfair price increases. The statement noted that the trustee decision did not halt the companies’ commercial activities and that the companies were not seized. It was stated that the trustees would monitor the processes in the companies in terms of compliance with the law.

Justice Minister Akın Gürlek made a statement on his social media account regarding the operation against the white meat sector. Gürlek noted that a simultaneous operation was carried out in 8 provinces under the coordination of the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office against actions deemed to disrupt market functioning, leading to unfair price increases and consumer grievances in the white meat sector.

SUPERVISORY RECEIVERS APPOINTED TO 13 CHICKEN COMPANIES

Minister Gürlek stated that within the scope of the investigation, supervisory receivers were appointed to 13 companies to prevent disruptions in the nation's basic food supply chain and to ensure commercial activities are conducted legally, transparently, and in a controllable manner.

STATEMENT FROM THE CHIEF PUBLIC PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE

A statement regarding the receivership decision came from the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. The statement included the following: "Considering recent public complaints about price increases in the white meat sector, notifications and applications made by our citizens, and sensitivities regarding access to basic food products and price stability, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has initiated investigation procedures. Within the scope of the investigation, allegations of unfair price increases, pricing processes within the sector, and practices affecting market order have been evaluated together concerning some companies operating in the white meat sector and their officials. Consequently, a supervisory receivership measure has been applied to 13 companies under Article 133 of the Criminal Procedure Code No. 5271.

"THERE IS NO SEIZURE DECISION"

To eliminate any potential public doubts on the matter, it should be specifically stated that the supervisory receivership measure does not mean the seizure of companies or the suspension of their commercial activities. There is no seizure decision regarding these companies within the scope of the investigation.

Supervisory receivership means monitoring the legality of companies' decisions, transactions, commercial activities, and financial processes through an official supervision mechanism appointed by the court, rather than replacing existing company management. The purpose of this measure is to prevent any disruptions in the production and supply chain, ensure the uninterrupted supply of white meat, and contribute to preventing hoarding, refusal to sell, artificial price increases, or anti-competitive practices that could harm our citizens in the market.

The investigation conducted by our Chief Public Prosecutor's Office is being meticulously carried out to protect the free market order, fair competition environment, consumer rights, and public interest in accessing basic food products. Respectfully announced to the public."

WHAT IS A SUPERVISORY RECEIVER?

A supervisory receiver is an official auditor appointed by the court, tasked with step-by-step review of the legality of decisions, commercial activities, and financial transactions made by the existing management, rather than completely taking over the company during an ongoing judicial investigation. The biggest benefit of this appointment for consumers is preventing shortages in the market by ensuring that the production and supply processes of the companies under investigation are not disrupted. Additionally, through this strict oversight, it prevents these companies from engaging in hoarding, withholding goods from sale, or forming cartels to create artificial price increases; thus, citizens' uninterrupted access to basic food products at fair and transparent prices is legally guaranteed.
