At least 111 people have died and 72 others have been injured due to a storm in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
A storm, heavy rain, and hail have impacted India. 111 people died and at least 72 were injured in accidents caused by the storm in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It was reported that most of the deaths were caused by falling trees and collapsing house walls.
FULL EXTENT OF DAMAGE UNKNOWN
Trees and billboards fell onto vehicles due to the storm. Mobile communication networks were also down in many areas. This hampered search-rescue and relief efforts, and made it difficult for officials to fully determine the extent of the damage. Across the state, 179 livestock died, and damage was reported to 227 homes.
COMPENSATION TO BE PAID TO VICTIMS
State official Narendra N. Srivastava stated that emergency teams have been dispatched to affected areas, and that homes, farmlands, and electrical infrastructure have suffered major damage, especially in rural areas.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath instructed district officials and relevant agencies to assist the victims. The official statement said, "Chief Minister Yogi instructed officials to immediately visit affected areas, provide assistance to victims, and initiate compensation payments."
OPPOSITION CALLS FOR COMPREHENSIVE AID
Main opposition Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav called on the government for comprehensive aid. In a post on his X account, Yadav said, "Hundreds of thousands of people have been seriously affected due to the collapse of homes, trees, and walls." Yadav also urged the government to provide free treatment, food, water, and temporary shelter for the injured. - UTTAR PRADESH
