Following more than 570 earthquakes that have occurred since Saturday off the coast of Santorini, Greece's tourism island, landslides have been observed, and many local residents have left the island due to the tremors. Evaluating the earthquakes centered in the Aegean Sea, Prof. Dr. Celal Şengör stated, "Honestly, the volcano there is already active. If it erupts, we can all say goodbye."

Earthquakes felt in the Cyclades Islands in the Aegean Sea, especially on the tourism island of Santorini, have caused great concern.

RESIDENTS OF THE REGION HAVE LEFT THEIR HOMES

Despite officials stating that the tremors were not related to volcanic activity, residents of the area left their homes out of fear of a severe earthquake, spending the night in open areas, while many others flocked to terminals and Santorini Port to head to the capital, Athens. Education in the region has been suspended until Friday.

CELAL ŞENGÖR: IF IT ERUPTS, WE'VE ALL BEEN LEFT TO GOD

Prof. Dr. Celal Şengör, who came to Muğla as a guest of the Muğla Metropolitan Municipality, evaluated the earthquakes centered in the Aegean Sea. Şengör stated, "I learned what kind of earthquakes they are and their depths; it was 7 kilometers. So, this is a normal depth, something expected. But what kind of earthquakes are they? And exactly where are they clustering? Well, that volcano there is already active. If it erupts, we've all been left to God." he said.

"THESE ALL CAUSE TSUNAMIS"

Şengör continued his remarks as follows: "What are the types of these earthquakes? I would really like to see that. Our people probably do the fault solutions. It needs to be taken in time. It is not possible to say anything right now. There is something that can be said now. How do these appear on the map? Each of the faults here is a normal fault. All of these can cause tsunamis. Because for a tsunami to occur, there needs to be a displacement on the seabed. The topography needs to change. For example, Istanbul is not like that. The fault in Istanbul is a strike-slip fault. The tsunami risk there only occurs if there is a landslide. But when there is a landslide, it can go up to 7 meters there."
