A newborn baby in Paris died after being allegedly thrown from a hotel room window by an 18-year-old American tourist - believed to be the baby's mother - and an investigation is ongoing.
Witnesses reported the horrific incident outside the Ibis-style hotel located on rue des Réglises in the 20th district of the city around 6:00 AM this morning. The young woman is thought to have thrown the child from her hotel room on the second floor.
Witnesses heard screams and quickly alerted the authorities, prompting emergency teams to rush to the scene. The baby was taken to a hospital in the 19th district, but according to Le Parisien, the child unfortunately died from injuries.
The alleged mother, who was on an educational trip with other American students, was also taken to the hospital. Witnesses claim that the baby was thrown from the window while still attached by the "umbilical cord."
According to a police source, the Paris prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into the "killing of a child under 15." A judge and officers from the Paris judicial police's child protection unit (BPM) arrived at the scene.
The young woman, described by prosecutors as "part of a group of young adults traveling in Europe," was hospitalized for surgery after recently giving birth. The Paris prosecutor's office stated: "She was also taken into custody at the scene. The possibility of denial of pregnancy is being evaluated."
The prosecutor's office also added: "The investigation is ongoing, and the exact circumstances of this tragedy have yet to be determined... We do not yet know if we are facing a situation of denial of pregnancy."
