The leader of the CHP, Özgür Özel, was subjected to a punch attack by 66-year-old Selçuk Tengioğlu outside the AKM. As new footage of the assailant emerges, Tengioğlu can be seen behind the barriers during Özel's press statement at the entrance of the AKM. While Özel was still speaking, the assailant crossed the barriers and entered the area where Özgür Özel was located.
CHP General Chairman Özgür Özel was attacked as he was leaving the Atatürk Cultural Center for the memorial ceremony of DEM Party Istanbul Deputy and Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Sırrı Süreyya Önder.
FOOTAGE OF THE MOMENTS FOLLOWING ÖZEL HAS EMERGED
It was determined that the person who punched Özel is 66-year-old Selçuk Tengioğlu, who has a criminal record for killing his two children 21 years ago. While the footage of the attack caused outrage, images also emerged of Tengioğlu following Özel in front of the Taksim Atatürk Cultural Center.
FOLLOWED ÖZEL WITH CALM BEHAVIOR
In the footage provided by CNN Türk, it was noted that the attacker was very close to Özel during his entrance to the AKM with his security team. The attacker was seen standing just outside the security circle, calmly following Özel.
CAPTURED BEHIND BARRIERS
While CHP General Chairman Özgür Özel was making a press statement at the entrance of the Atatürk Cultural Center, the attacker was seen behind the barriers. While Özel was continuing his speech, the attacker first crossed the barriers and entered the area where Özgür Özel was located.
TRANSFERRED TO THE PUBLIC ORDER BRANCH
Selçuk Tengioğlu, who attacked CHP General Chairman Özgür Özel, was transferred to the Istanbul Public Order Branch after his procedures at the Beyoğlu District Police Department.
HAD TEA AND CHATTED BEFORE THE ATTACK
On the other hand, moments of Tengioğlu having breakfast in Beyoğlu, drinking tea, and chatting with a hotel staff member were also reflected in the footage. According to information obtained, Selçuk Tengioğlu, who was taken into custody, stated in his first statement that he left the hotel he was staying in after hearing about the program. The attacker Tengioğlu reportedly said, "I had previously applied to the Republican People's Party for a meal card, but they did not give me food because I was not a party member. I had been angry for a long time because of this. I had been holding onto the anger I accumulated regarding the CHP calling young people to the streets. I left the apart hotel I was staying in Taksim after hearing there was a program. When I went there, I actually had no intention of attacking, but I couldn't control my nerves when I saw it."
