It was claimed that the grave of the deposed Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad's father, Hafez al-Assad, was opened in his hometown of Latakia, Qardaha, and that his bones were stolen. Hafez al-Assad's grave had previously been set on fire.

The grave of Hafiz Assad, the father of the deposed leader of the Baath regime in Syria, Bashar Assad, was opened in Latakia, and his bones were taken away. The fate of the bones is unknown following the attack carried out by unidentified individuals.

According to Russian media, images and photos circulating on social media show that there is a large empty space where the ornate gravestone at Assad's memorial grave used to be.

Hafiz Assad's grave in Latakia was set on fire and vandalized last December.
