The Shara administration has arrested former political security chief Atif Najib, who is considered responsible for all the deaths that occurred in the city of Dera during the civil war in 2011. According to a report by the state-run SANA News Agency, Najib, who is the cousin of the ousted leader Bashar Assad, was captured in Latakia on the country's western coast. The report stated, "The criminal Atif Najib has been referred to the competent authorities to be tried and held accountable for the crimes he committed against the Syrian people."

The people of Dera held Atif Najib responsible for the deaths and demanded his execution. Following the backlash, Assad dismissed Najib from his position.
