Atif Najib, the former head of political security who is considered responsible for all the deaths that occurred in the city of Daraa during the civil war that began in Syria in 2011, and who is also the cousin of the ousted leader Bashar al-Assad's aunt, has been captured.

COUSIN OF ASSAD RESPONSIBLE FOR DEATHS IN DERA CAPTURED
The Shara administration has arrested former political security chief Atif Najib, who is considered responsible for all the deaths that occurred in the city of Dera during the civil war in 2011. According to a report by the state-run SANA News Agency, Najib, who is the cousin of the ousted leader Bashar Assad, was captured in Latakia on the country's western coast. The report stated, "The criminal Atif Najib has been referred to the competent authorities to be tried and held accountable for the crimes he committed against the Syrian people."
MANY PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES AS A RESULT OF MILITARY INTERVENTION
Protests against Assad began in Dera on March 15, 2011, after 15 students were arrested for allegedly writing anti-government slogans on the city's walls. Syrians in the city organized protests calling for the students' release after reports of torture emerged. Many people lost their lives as a result of the military intervention during the protests. The people of Dera held Atif Najib responsible for the deaths and demanded his execution. Following the backlash, Assad dismissed Najib from his position.
