The investigation regarding the allegation that Ekrem İmamoğlu's bachelor's degree is fake, who was removed from the position of Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) and arrested, has been completed, and in the prepared indictment, it was requested that İmamoğlu be sentenced to imprisonment of 2 years and 6 months to 8 years and 9 months for the crime of 'forgery of official documents' in a repeated manner.

TRIAL DATE ANNOUNCED

The date for İmamoğlu to appear before the judge in the case has been announced. İmamoğlu's trial will begin on September 11 at 1:00 PM at the Istanbul 59th Criminal Court of First Instance.

DETAILS FROM THE INDICTMENT

In the indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was stated that University College of Northern Cyprus (UCNC) is not one of the universities recognized by the Higher Education Council, and that in 1990, when the suspect Ekrem İmamoğlu transferred, University College of Northern Cyprus was not among the universities eligible for horizontal transfer.

45 STUDENTS ADMITTED TO A 3-PERSON QUOTA

The indictment stated that only Eastern Mediterranean University is recognized by the Higher Education Council among the higher education institutions operating in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and that the horizontal transfer quotas were unlawfully increased, with some students being unlawfully removed from the list and new students added, with 54 people being admitted to a department that had a quota of 3.

The indictment noted that numerous fraudulent actions were carried out regarding both the higher education institutions that would accept applications and the students whose applications would be evaluated, stating that no language proficiency test or qualification exam was conducted for students whose applications for horizontal transfer to the English Business Program were accepted, and that students applying for horizontal transfer from abroad referred to individuals involved in the process such as 'rector, dean, board members, faculty secretary, members of the horizontal transfer commission' as references.

REGISTERED AS A STUDENT OF ANOTHER UNIVERSITY IN THE STUDENT REGISTER

The indictment stated that the suspect Ekrem İmamoğlu's father, Prof. Dr. Ersin Güredin, who works at Istanbul University Faculty of Business, went to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus with academic leave and that his return was falsely represented as a permanent return from abroad, benefiting his son Eren Güredin from the foreign transfer process, and that a student named Necati Eren Güredin, who graduated from University College of Northern Cyprus (U.C.N.C.), was falsely registered in the student register as a student of Eastern Mediterranean University, just like the suspect Ekrem İmamoğlu. Additionally, a person working as the head of student affairs at Eastern Mediterranean University stated in a declaration taken as 'knowledgeable' that there was no record of Ekrem İmamoğlu at the school, and therefore this person did not enter this school.

Despite the fact that Istanbul University was aware that only Eastern Mediterranean University is recognized by the Higher Education Council among the educational institutions established in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, it was reported that during İmamoğlu's horizontal transfer to Istanbul University, it was determined that he was falsely registered in the student register as a student of Eastern Mediterranean University, and that with this action, both the officials of Istanbul University and the suspect Ekrem İmamoğlu knew that the institution named University College of Northern Cyprus was not recognized by the Higher Education Council, yet it was shown that the suspect had transferred from an institution with equivalence.

"FAKE DOCUMENT WAS CREATED"

The indictment stated that the documents submitted to the university by the suspect Ekrem İmamoğlu during the horizontal transfer process consisted of a promotional brochure belonging to University College of Northern Cyprus and a transcript, and that despite it being clear that these documents did not belong to Eastern Mediterranean University, the registration of the suspect as a student of Eastern Mediterranean University was made by Istanbul University, and that the false official document was prepared with an obvious fraud, creating a document that was formally correct but false in content.

The indictment noted that there was no information or finding at any stage of the life story of the suspect Ekrem İmamoğlu indicating that he studied at Eastern Mediterranean University, yet many written and visual media outlets, including the official site of IMM, included information and statements that the suspect transferred from Eastern Mediterranean University, and that the fundamental reason for this situation was that during the registration for horizontal transfer to Istanbul University, the suspect was shown as a student of Eastern Mediterranean University. It was recorded that İmamoğlu acted in a way that would create a different perception in the public and that all these issues were clearly and explicitly asked during the statement, but the suspect avoided making explanations by leaving the relevant questions unanswered. It was also stated that he fraudulently used the documents he obtained for the purpose of a Master's degree at Istanbul University, for military service at the Ministry of National Defense, and submitted them to the Supreme Election Council.

REQUEST FOR UP TO 8 YEARS AND 9 MONTHS IN PRISON

In the prepared indictment, it was requested that the suspect Ekrem İmamoğlu be sentenced to imprisonment of 2 years and 6 months to 8 years and 9 months for the crime of 'forgery of official documents' in a repeated manner.
