The number of people who lost their lives in a traffic accident in western Niger on Friday has risen to 22.
17 OF THE DEAD ARE SOLDIERS
In a statement made on Saturday by Niger's Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, it was stated that of the 22 people who died as a result of the collision of two passenger buses on the Maradi-Madaoua highway, approximately 55 kilometers from the city of Madaoua, 17 were soldiers and 37 people were injured.
ACCIDENTS ARE VERY FREQUENT IN THE COUNTRY
An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the accident. Nigerien officials had been intensifying road safety awareness campaigns in order to prevent the frequent traffic accidents in recent times.
In the country, factors such as excessive speed, drunk driving, poorly maintained vehicles, and bad road conditions frequently cause traffic accidents.
MORE THAN 1,200 PEOPLE DIED LAST YEAR ALONE
Last year, more than 7,100 traffic accidents were recorded in Niger. In these accidents, more than 1,200 people lost their lives, while more than 4,400 people were seriously injured.
